Hermann’s Tortoise

(testudo hermanni)

The Hermann’s tortoise (testudo hermanni) is one of the most popular tortoises to keep as a pet because they do not grow overly large, only around ten inches long as adults. Though small in size, Hermann’s tortoises are a big commitment: think at least fifty years! Tortoises are famous for their long lifespans, so be sure to plan ahead before bringing one into your life. Charming and adorable, these tortoises eat leafy greens and veggies, and require UVA and UVB lighting.

This baby Herman’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni) is native to southern Europe. Of course, this individual was captive bred and will have to grow an inch or two until he is big enough to be adopted. Tortoises are very personable animals with a surprising amount of energy.
